Easier to Sing, Clearer to Hear
MDR-7506, Fully Awakened.
The SONY MDR-7506, renowned as the industry-standard recording studio headphones.
While it undoubtedly has unique strengths, it also comes with some drawbacks.
Thus, we have completely modified the MDR-7506, transforming it into a flawless pair of headphones.

Beyond the Studio Standard
Foreword: (By Developer Tomonobu Hara, Sugar Fields)
As a musician and studio engineer, I have spent years obsessing over achieving the “perfect sound.”
However, finding headphones that I could be completely satisfied with was never easy.
I visited countless specialty stores in Akihabara, testing the latest models, yet none provided everything I was looking for.
The Ideal Headphones
- Resolution: Every sound source stands out clearly, with pinpoint positioning so precise it feels within reach.
- Bass: Realistic interaction between kick drums and basslines—deep and full-bodied, but without unnecessary boominess.
- Treble: Crystal-clear and open, as if there were no ceiling to the soundstage.
- Comfort: Enjoyable to use whether you're a performer, mix engineer, or listener.
- Durability: Built tough to withstand rigorous studio work.
At times, I have sought headphones that could fulfill this ideal, even if they cost several thousand dollars.
However, reality was harsh.

MDR-7506 and My Struggles
The SONY MDR-7506, a staple in recording studios, had been my trusted companion for years.
Its monitoring capabilities allowed me to hear my own sound clearly, with relatively good stereo imaging.
However, it lacked stability in the low-end, and the treble could become fatiguing over long sessions—making it less ideal for casual listening.
Yet, the MDR-7506’s unique character and appeal made it an indispensable tool in my music production.
The Challenge of a Complete Modification
Could I retain the character of the MDR-7506 while overcoming its limitations?
With this in mind, I leveraged the knowledge and experience gained from developing AMATERAS original monitor speakers to undertake a complete modification of the MDR-7506.
It has been nearly 20 years since we began developing and selling our original monitor speaker.
Our design philosophy of achieving full-range sound reproduction with a single-unit driver became a crucial foundation for our headphone modifications.
After all, headphones are essentially a form of full-range speaker.
We didn’t just replace the cables or drivers—we took a drastic approach, analyzing and refining every aspect, from housing structure to internal reflection adjustments and airflow optimization for ideal diaphragm movement.
After extensive trial and error—sacrificing more than a dozen MDR-7506 units in the process (😭)—we finally achieved the ideal sound.

The Awakened MDR-7506
Unparalleled Sound Quality
Through the AMATERAS modification, the MDR-7506 has evolved significantly while maintaining its original character.
✅ Ultra-High Resolution:
Now, every detail is more vivid than ever. Each sound source is pinpointed precisely, offering incredible depth and stereo imaging.
✅ Deep and Well-Defined Bass:
The once-weak low-end now delivers astonishing resolution.
Rather than a boomy, exaggerated bass, it offers a deep and well-grounded low-end where the interplay between basslines and kick drums is distinct and natural.
✅ Transparent Highs:
We have addressed the harsh treble peaks of the original MDR-7506 while maintaining all the essential frequency characteristics.
The result is crystal-clear highs that accurately reproduce the delicate nuances of instruments without listener fatigue, even during extended use.
✅ Dense and Immersive Soundstage:
Experience a three-dimensional space, as if the performers were playing right in front of you.
Reverb from halls, rooms, and chambers comes alive, making these headphones perfect not only for music production but also for listening, movies, and gaming with breathtaking realism.
✅ Supreme Comfort:
The ear pads feature a premium mesh material that is breathable and gentle on the skin.
No more discomfort from sweat or premature wear and tear—enjoy extended use without hassle.
✅ Professional Studio Monitor Performance:
We have preserved the strengths of the original MDR-7506 while fully unleashing its true potential, delivering a next-generation version of the classic.
Those familiar with the MDR-7506 will find it instantly comfortable, while modern professionals will appreciate its enhanced usability in today’s demanding environments.
We proudly present a new era of studio monitor headphones.
